Business telephony has never been so easy. SIP trunks standardize IP-based business telephony. But what is a SIP trunk?
In this article, we explain what a SIP trunk is and how it works. We also explain the advantages of SIP trunking and the reasons for switching to our TKD SIP trunk.
What is a SIP trunk?
SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol, a network protocol that allows you to control communication sessions (usually telephone calls). Trunk is the English word for strand or bundle, as several phone numbers are combined into one connection or SIP account. With a normal VoIP connection, each number has its own SIP account.
A SIP trunk can be thought of as a virtual channel that connects your telephone system to your telephone provider. Signal and voice streams are sent over the Internet using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. SIP trunks can be used instead of traditional ISDN connections or as a supplement to existing ISDN connections.
Unlike private VoIP connections, which are assigned only one phone number, SIP trunks allow multiple phone numbers (known as number blocks). This means that all employees’ extensions or end devices are connected to the telephone network via a shared connection. A SIP trunk can also handle multiple calls simultaneously. The telephone system manages the extension numbers and regulates the distribution of incoming and outgoing calls.
How does a SIP trunk work?
Like traditional VoIP telephony, telecommunications via a SIP trunk requires a broadband connection through which voice packets are transmitted. With SIP trunking, you can combine multiple phone numbers into a single number block that can be dialed directly from one account. A central IP-based telephone system (PBX) registers and forwards incoming calls to extensions.
Advantages of a SIP trunk
Reduced monthly line charges: Using multiple lines and extensions can be very cost-effective.
Lower call rates: The wide choice of SIP trunk providers and the resulting competitive pressure have led to a significant reduction in call rates.
Better customer service: Enable your customers to contact you at additional geographic (local) and international phone numbers. A corresponding number is added to the SIP trunk and assigned to the IP phone system. A geographic phone number offers lower call charges for your customers.
No need to change your phone number when you move: SIP trunks are cloud-based and therefore not tied to a specific location. Even if you relocate your business, your phone number will not change. Customers can contact you as usual. Calls do not need to be redirected by your phone provider, which can be time-consuming and expensive.
